    .22 vs .177

I am putting a lot of thought into my next air rifle. I have narrowed down the brand, however, I am on the fence with .22 or .177

Can some of you experienced airguns shooters chime in with what you prefer (.22 vs .177)

Pros and cons of both would also be awesome.

    Thanks for the help.

    We need more info...
Brand, model, and purpose (including target and range).
.22 is not better than .177 or vice versa, they each have their advantages and disadvantages depending on which rifle and what purpose.

If you are going to keep it non-PAL,
For target shooting, can plinking and the occasional tree rat... .177
For everyday tree rats and can plinking .22.

If you are going to sup it up, then .177 for FT and .22 for critters.

Or buy Frank's dual calibre beast and get the best of both worlds.

I assume you're talking non-PAL, and in that case I would always go for the .22 cal because at the same velocity (<500 fps), it packs a lot more punch.... The only exception would be if you are ONLY using it for punching paper....

Your post got me thinking. Seems that I had forgotten to list this when they came in:

Not sure if this makes your choice easier, or harder...

Does this model charge via tank ONLY or can CO2 capsules be used?

I am going with non PAL for now, but will prob change that in 6-12 months when I recharge the "air gun $$" pot ')

You can buy an adapter and run it off a single 12 g cartridge. I got 24 good shots on 1 cartridge in my .177 cal.

And, I know Scopes and Ammo sells the adapters...

The nice thing about the QB-78/79 series is the easy interchangability of caliber- all that's needed is the bbl and bolt to change caliber.

I've taken grouse and rabbit in both calibers. With .177, you need to be capable of precision head shots. Anything else is just asking for trouble with that tiny pill.

.177 seems to out distance .22 for me , in terms of usable accuracy. Still, I try to keep shots on game under 25 yards, regardless of caliber. Like Bob said, the .22 will carry more retained energy, especially in a sub-pal gun.

If it were up to me, I'd plan for both calibers. It doesn't have to be all at once. Get one and become proficient with it- caliber changes can always come later.

If I were concerned about splitting nasal hairs on a gnat at 25 yds, I'd opt for .177, .22 for every thing else.

    Regards,
