    What happened?

Went for an afternoon walk today scouting for squirrels. I am really not sure what has happened but for two years straight there was probably a squirrel for every tree. This year not even a sign that squirrels exist at all. There are no predator tracks in the snow(maybe they run into the same situation) only lots of deer tracks. I could assume our extremely dry summer had something to do with this, but not even one sign in a mile?

nope, very low squirrel stress here in this area. All the kids are grown up and getting stuck on speed bumps with their lowered Civic's...lol

Maybe it is the tail end of one of those cycles? Too many squirrels so most move away/die?

Maybe they're re-grouping, waiting for the right moment to strike.
I'd say I care- but I'd probably be lying...

Way too many tree rats around my place but the season ended Dec. 15. Hang up some bird feeders with black oil sunflower seeds and they will be back in gangs in no time.

It is actually unbelievable that many squirrels could just disappear completely.

I cleared out a lot of them a couple of years ago (in my area) but have no doubt their population will bounce back quickly! Each female can have 2 litters per year and up to 6 young per litter. Don't worry they will soon be back! lol
