I was considering this option as well for the next build. What I was pondering is if a shallow V shape loading platform, that was the whole width of the receiver opening, might be a lot easier to load. A pellet would tend to roll to the bottom of the V? Thoughts?
But it would involve making a breech that had about an inch more tenon socket.

The reason for the longer socket is I've never been totally happy with the barrel stability. Another inch would improve this dramatically and give a longer fulcrum for 2 set screws

Interesting how perception varies. Once read a post by Dennis Quackenbush regarding barrel/receiver fit vs multiples of grew screws. Was talking about Crosman products at the time as I recall but principles are always constant.
Nearest I can remember, Daq's stand on the issue was that a barrel properly fitted to the receiver did not require securing grub screws enmass to remain solidly afixed . Recalling this, I mounted my barrel with his comments in mind. Am quite pleased with the results thus far but will surely watch with great interest any new ideas.

Yes actually I have read that comment by Dennis. He is a passionate and brilliant gun smith but he also has some pretty strong opinions that don't always jive. I'm thinking about his rant about barrel steel that was utter bupkiss.
However the Big 4 use 3 to 5 set screws on their barrels and proof is in the pudding. They are the undisputed kings of accuracy.

All true enough. I think most folks perhaps fall into a rut of sorts after finding something that works for them...and stop looking for that "better way", believing perhaps that their search has ended successfully .
An open mind serves well I find.
Never having had such rifles aa you refer to on hand, would you mind describing the arrangement of the "3-5" grub screws? Inline ....radially ...etc.
