Lothar Walther ready to go for the AR/QBD

Well there has been some grumblings about it being too quiet around here so I'll post up what I've been working for the last few days.

One of Eric's Lother Walther barrels machined for the 15mm AR/QBd configuration

I was waiting on bluing compound to complete the job. The bluing on this barrel is Slow Rust Blue. I think it turned out smashing

Overall barrel showing the deep black of the rust blue process. This one shows warm tones in the right light which apparently is a sign of a fully developed rust blue treatment.

View showing breach end. I tightened the tolerance over factory to minimize the wiggle these guns have in this area. Not by much though, a mere 0.003".

View showing stepped target crown. It still needs the final pass with a brass crown tool

I can't wait for the opportunity to whistle a bunch of different pellets downrange...stay tuned

I finally got some time to get the barrel finished up and installed on the rifle for some testing.

    DSCF0183.jpg

First thing I noticed when I chambered a pellet was the throat lead was too tight and would need a bit more work with the reamer.

Here is the rifle with the first 5 shot group, Meisterkugelns at 10m. Not too bad for the first 5 shots through a new barrel but something is obviously not up to snuff

I took the barrel off again and eased the throat lead a bit more and repolished.
The next 5 shots looked a lot better

And it passed the Anschutz test

I still have to test a variety of pellets at different velocities to see how fussy this barrel is. ( I'm guessing it wont be) but I'm pretty happy with what I'm seeing here with a randomly selected pellet.

Good idea on the "vee".... Why would the breech need changing?....

I was considering this option as well for the next build. What I was pondering is if a shallow V shape loading platform, that was the whole width of the receiver opening, might be a lot easier to load. A pellet would tend to roll to the bottom of the V? Thoughts?

But it would involve making a breech that had about an inch more tenon socket.
