    Building a shooting bench

Ok...I finally realized my target shooting bench (which is my four summer tires on rims stacked with a piece of plywood on top) is never gonna allow me to shoot one hole groups cause its too darn wobbly. I went to the building supply store today and picked up a few pieces of 2x4 and a bag of 3''deck screws to get me started. I will try and take some pictures of my progress of this project as I go along.

Are you working from plans or your own idea, certainly would be interested in the design and seeing this on the site

This is my own idea. The only plans are to make it solid, cheap in cost, look decent, and only use basic tools.

One of the more interesting designs I've ever seen was the modified picnic table design. This fellow built an ordinary 2x6 picnic table but extended the tie brace at one end to accommodate an end seat for shooting.

Something about conflicting opinions....his wife wanted him to build a picnic table and he wanted a shooting bench

Here is what I used for measurements on my homemade shooting bench...benchplans.jpg
This size seems to be perfect and works well for me and is good for both lefty's and righty's. The legs can be made of whatever you want. The height of the bench is 30" floor to top of the bench. Of course you make it so that it's comfortable to you.

Hope I'm not too late before you made your cuts. In any case it can give you an idea and others in the future.

Fab, I like your idea for both right and left shooters.

Not my Idea but thanks. On occasion I have a visitor that shoots weird and uses their left hand to do stuff...lol.
Of course the dimensions can be made bigger to suit anyone's needs but I wouldn't go any smaller. Depending on what you use to support your gun. If you're using a bag then smaller would be ok but if you were to use a MTM plastic shooting rest like I have, going smaller would not be good as those are quite large but some of the other shooting rest fit great on this size. You want to have a bit of room to play with so you can move the rest around on the bench to suit your shooting position.

Don't know how I got it in my head but I thought you were making something portable but solid, not permanent and solid. That should be earthquake proof.

I first thought portable, only I do all my target shooting at home in the back yard so permanent it is.
