I think the item beside the steady rest (which mounts on the bed) is a "follower rest" (which mounts on the carriage) and is used for things like knurling (or threading?) on a long, flexible shaft.... hard to tell from the photo, but that's my guess....
BTW, Sean, my Atlas has a quick-change gearbox....

Ya a quick change is awesome Bob....I can REALLY appreciate because I have to work on both a manual gearchanger and the other that I posted this summer with the quick box....Love that gear changer

If I was willing to wait I would cruise Crown assets and school disposal.
If I wanted instant gratification I would head straight for Busy Bee.....hopefully buying a model that happened to be on sale. You can't beat sheer mass when it comes to engine lathes and the Chinese use lots of cast iron.
