    1701 P project proper start

Finally got a few spare hours to put things together.

Only fly in the ointment was losing the safety ball bearing out of the 13-77 that was the donor of the 24" bbl for this project. Oh yeah, the XX/SBK bolts wont fit in the LW bbl of the 1701

Did get it together the way I wanted to, with the severely restricted T/P of the 1701 out of the picture. I used 1/4" poly tube under an XX transfer port, and it actually all fits together, without leaking. I don't think I'll be drilling out the flow hole in the valve any time soon~ we'll see how long a string I can get out of it first.

I'm looking forward to seeing how it performs. Got too tired to carry on with shooting/chronying. She's a mean looking midget now, with the long bbl and big banner aboard. Pix to follow.

    Regards,

    Doc Sharptail

How long is the air tube on this creation Doc? What's your predicted shot count?

That's what it looks like with the 24" XX .177 bbl and Banner 6-24X aboard. The air tube ain't all that big on it by any stretch of the imagination.

Same bbl and scope aboard a 13-77 two grouse seasons ago:

Ruffy fell to a Crosman Ultra-mag F/T dome, 10.3 grains worth, at 20 yards or so. This bbl pretty well stacks the ultra mags at 12 meters. It will group them into 3/4" at 50 yds, which is nudging m.o.a. mark... just in case anyone was wondering why I went to the lengths I did to get it aboard the 1701-P.

Got a string of 26 usable shots from 2400 PSI all the way down to 1200 psi. Got the front, middle, and tail end of the curve with no effort at all. Still haven't touched the hammer and hammer-spring adjusters on the gun yet.... I was expecting maybe ten shots on the usable crest of the curve. Ended up with middle 6's to low 7's. It probably won't take much of a back off of the hammer-spring to get her back to target grade upper 4's-low 5's. Crank or 2 the other way will have me sniping my grouse in the ear again.

I'm pretty pumped over this. I'd much rather run the gun at the 2400 PSI range, instead of the 2.9-3.0 K I'd been previously running the gun at with the short bbl... My day has been definitely made. Got my fingers crossed to shoot for group tomorrow night.

    Regards,

Should have mentioned that I ran the 8 gr polymag predators over the chrony tonight~ the ultra mags are going to be a bit slower

That looks really good with the 24-incher on there, Doc

Should be a hum-dinger of a grouse gun: nice and light, good power, accurate and more than enough shots for a day of grouse poppin'...couldn't ask for much more. Nicely done!

Apart from cutting a piece of 1/4" poly tubing, this build didn't take much...

It got me thinking about (yet again) going to a regulated bottle.

Haven't seen an update on your 22-50-B build, Todd. How is that gun working out?

Now to find a source for a .12 cal bank....

About the same as you last seen it...haven't had the time (or money) this winter to do much with my AG's .

Had a couple custom tank blocks made for me though (similar to Bob's design) by "JezX" over on the CAF and gathered up a few other pieces so I'm hoping to get back at her shortly.

Oh yeah, picking up my mini lathe and some tooling in a couple weeks too so that will keep me preoccupied for the foreseeable future
