New Pellets in Holland
The latest rage in the Netherlands seems to be pellets that are virtually identical to a .22LR bullet, fired from a .224 (.223"?) barrel.... They are reportedly made by RWS and weigh 41.5 gr. but I can't find them on the RWS website.... I've seen photos, and they definitely look like .22LR bullets, right down to the hollow base and smaller diameter where they would sit in the case.... They are 0.472" long, and seem to like a 15" twist....

They are also supposed to be available in a 64.5 gr. but I couldn't find them on that website.... The heavier, longer bullet needs about a 9" twist.... The 41.5 gr. bullet took all the top spots in a rainy, windy 100M benchrest competition in the Netherlands today.... so perhaps somebody has figured out how to make a non-waisted pellet work in airguns.... They are reportedly using high subsonic velocities for both bullets....

Looks like a project Bob
I'm game if you want to split a 1000 lot. I have no idea what 85 Dutch Marks equals.
It certainly makes sense. Small Bore 50m is high subsonic velocities using a 40-41 gr bullet using a typical 16" twist. Maybe it is as simple as velocity and twist.
Eric......We need barrels

sorry Euro's
works out to $106 CAD

I'm tempted, Sean.... TJ's make a 0.224" groove (0.219" land) with a 1 in 14" twist, 6 land, and a 1/2" OD.... For a 24" length they should be $102 US each plus shipping, according to my last price list.... I ran the numbers through the Border Barrels Twist Calculator.... http://www.border-barrels.com/barrel_twist.htm .... using 0.472" for the bullet length (and using pure lead) and estimating the nose length and base diameter as 0.20".... and it says the Stability Factor in a 14" twist would be 1.5 at 1050 fps and 2.0 at 900.... pretty much ideal....
Tell you what.... you buy the bullets, I'll get two barrels, and we'll square up, if necessary, after all the shipping is looked after.... Whaddya say?....

Done deal. Shall I get the ones in the first link or the second link...or both?
I was just playing with some numbers as well and 14 twist looks very good. By 12 it's definitely over stabilized
80-90 fpe out of 22 cal :cower:

Looks like the bullets that won the match on Sunday in Holland were the Drummen (second link).... He also makes the winning rifle (the Sinner $3000E) and the barrels (.223 cal - $400E).... I wonder how (if) they will work in the TJ's 0.224" liner?....

Good question. I've been pondering that one myself.
It absolutely will work but I'm not sure about the accuracy. There are all kinds of conversions for AR type platforms to fire the 22lr down a .224 barrel.
Traditionally the 22lr barrel is .221 to .2215 for match and a little more sloppy in semi auto's like the 10/22.
The critical factor will be the sealing band on the bullet ( those are absolutely 22lr sub bullets...) If it's .223+ then accuracy should be do-able. It may be a try and see. Possibly a lapped .221 barrel may be the winner except all the .221 barrels produced have a 16 rate and I agree we need at least 15.
I have wondered for a long time why wouldn't a small bore setup work equally as well using air as the power source. In my mind it should work. Both are optimally sub sonic and match ammo is specifically made to not have enough pressure spike to hammer the bullet.

I just found this spec on the Redman liners. 0.223 but once again the rate is 16
SPECS:
4140 steel. .223" (5.6mm) groove diameter for .22 Short and Long Rifle (LR), 1-16 twist (LR) or 1-20 twist for Short. 5/16" (7.9mm) O.D.,25" Liner - 26-3/8" (67cm) overall, 25" (63.5cm) usable length. 32" Liner - 32" (81.2cm) overall, 30-5/8" (77.7cm) usable length. Not chambered.

Maybe we're better off to do a complete DIY approach.... Use the TJ's liners and cast and size our own bullets.... Lyman have a mold....
http://www.lymanproducts.com/lyman/b....php?entryID=1
I don't see a diameter, though.... I assume they would be big enough to size to 0.224" with a Lee sizer....
http://leeprecision.com/new-lube-size-kit-.224.html
Maybe you should get the barrel liners and chamber them and I could get the mold and sizing die and make some bullets?.... I already have the pot, ladle, and press.... just a thought....

I talked to Mike Sayers at TJs (859) 635-5560.... He has the 14" twist 0.224" liners in stock, $4.25 per inch, so $102 US for a 24".... He said $22.50 postage for two, for a total of $226.50.... Custom liners are just a matter of making a new mandrel (they are hammer forged), minimum order or pay for the mandrel.... I gave him your name and told him you may contact him....
